Fivemiletown Football: 1931/32

Summer Friendlies

July 1931 there was a report on an ‘Inter-League match’ between Augher and Fivemiletown that took place on the Fivemiletown Recreation Grounds, at the time of writing I do not know which leagues it refers too. It went on to say ’the game was fast and exciting’, it was only eight minutes into the game when Victor Caruth opened the scoring for the home side. The visitors pressed hard for the equalizer, but Brandon, the home keeper, made several good saves.
The second half and Augher kept on pressing but the Fivemiletown defence was sound. Morrison broke away and won Fivemiletown a corner, which Fenton swung-in and Moore headed into the net.
Final score Fivemiletown 2-0 Augher

Fivemiletown and Lisbellaw met in Brookeborough for a friendly which ended in a draw of two goals apiece.

Fivemiletown and District League
Found a couple of reports concerning this league.

This game took place at Castleholm, Omagh, and it looks like Fivemiletown were no match for the soldiers, who scored inside the first minute. Scoring for Fivemiletown- Boyd, Morrison (2) and Moore.

Fivemiletown and District league
Brookeborough Rovers 2-1 Screeby
Played on Fivemiletown Recreational Grounds
Brookeborough 0-2 Fivemiletown
Played in Brookeborough.

Irish Junior Cup R1
Fivemiletown 1-2 Corinthians
This was a great cup tie with both teams playing great counter-attacking football and both keepers making some fine saves, It was Fivemiletown who took the lead when just before half time V. Caruth gave the visiting keeper no chance with a shot from close in.
The second half and it was Fivemiletown who put the pressure of the opposing goal, shots from Morrison, Boyd and Caruth failed to find the net, Corinthians broke quickly and equalized, but Fivemiletown kept on pressing in an effort to regain the lead, but the Corinthians managed to score again taking the lead and the game.
Fivemiletown- Vaughan, W. Caruth, Torrens, Montgomery, Moore, Graham, J. Boyd, Morrison, Breadon, O’Malley and V. Caruth.

Fivemiletown 2-7 Omagh United
Omagh United, the league leader, provided the opposition in this league game, and Omagh United retained the top spot and their unbeaten record with a convincing win.

Dromore United 5-2 Fivemiletown
Dromore United gained their first win of the season by defeating Fivemiletown, who are now the only team in the league without a win to their credit.
Fivemiletown- Morris, W. Caruth, Torrens, Shields, Fenton, Hackett, O’Malley, Breadon, Morrison, Boyd and V. Caruth.

Fivemiletown 1-2 R.U.C. Fermanagh
The first half it as all Fivemiletown with R.U.C. only getting into the Fivemiletown on a couple of occasions, unfortunately, on one of these occasions, they won a penalty and promptly scored.
Five minutes after the restart O’Malley sent in a shot this rebounded to Morrison, who scored the equalizer. The visitors ended the game the stronger and managed to score the decisive winner.
Fivemiletown- McClintock, Torrens, W. Caruth, Porter, Magee, Montgomery, Morrison, V. Caruth, Fenton, O’Malley and Breadon.

The next league match for Fivemiletown was meant to be a home game against Omagh Depot, but their transport broke down on the way and the game had to be postponed. The match was played mid-week with Omagh Depot winning but the paper failed to report the final score.

Enniskillen G.N.R. 5-1 Fivemiletown
Another easy win for Fivemiletown’s opponents.

I noticed there were Fermanagh and Western fixtures scheduled for some of the teams on Boxing day, not Fivemiletown though, they had a friendly game against Enniskillen G.N.R. on the Recreational Grounds, plenty of goals in this game with the final score being a draw of six goals each.

Next up was the visit of Newtownbutler Stars to Fivemiletown, but owing to the field being covered in water the match had to be postponed. And the following week, Fivemiletown were due to travel to Enniskillen to take on Corinthians but were unable to field a team. Newtownbutler Stars then failed to field a team when they were meant to travel to Fivemiletown, Fivemiletown gain 2 points.
The league game between Fivemiletown v Dromore, to be played in Fivemiletown was postponed owing to the illness of Major-General Montgomery.

Corinthians 2-2 Fivemiletown
Played on the Broadmeadow, Enniskillen, it was Fivemiletown who attacked in the early stages of the game and caused Corinthians defence some anxiety. Fivemiletown was first to score, Corinthians then raised their game and Vaughan, Fivemiletown keeper, had to make a few good saves to keep the lead at the break. Into the second half and Corinthians equalized, but it was short-lived as Fivemiletown regained the lead again within minutes, Corinthians pushed hard and their efforts were awarded with an equalizer late on. Both teams could have won the game in the dying minutes as Corinthians were awarded a penalty, but Vaughan saved, at the other end Fivemiletown struck the post.

Death of Dr Blakeley
Football Team’s Respect
Fivemiletown postponed the match against Corinthians due to be played on the Recreational Grounds, Fivemiletown, owing to the death of Dr Blakeley, a past President of the club.
Didn’t find any result for this rescheduled match.

Fivemiletown 2-2 Fermanagh R.U.C.
The last league game I could find this season.
From the start, the visitors had the best of the play and Vaughan, the home keeper, made several good saves. By the break RUC were two goals to the good, but as the game restarted, Fivemiletown played much better, and goals were obtained by Morrison and Breadon to equal the score.

Mulhern Cup R1
Fivemiletown 2-3 Dromore
The play was pretty even for most of the first half, but two quick goals by Dromore meant Fivemiletown were behind at the break. Fivemiletown must have come back into the game but unfortunately, Dromore scored in the last few minutes to go through to the next round.

Concert and Dance
A very successful concert, organized by Sergeant Vaughan, in aid of Fivemiletown Football and Cricket Club, was held in the British Legion Hall.
Sergeant Vaughan was M.C., with the ‘Fivemiletown Jazz Band’ supplying the music.
