Fivemiletown Football: Coffey Cup 1993

Coffey Cup 1993

The only report I can find in the local papers regarding this year’s Coffey Cup Competition is the final itself, here is the match report, taken from the Impartial Reporter dated 1st July 1993;
‘Fivemiletown coasted to this year’s Coffey Cup summer competition with an emphatic 5-0 victory over Lisbellaw.
The Clogher Valley side was just too strong in virtually every department in this poor final. They dominated from start to finish of the second half with striker Gordon Cutler helping himself to four goals.
But Lisbellaw had their chances early on when young Kevin Hopkins found space to head just wide. Indeed Hopkins and his partner Nigel Keys caused the Fivemiletown defence several problems over the 90 minutes and should have made more of the chances they created.
In those opening exchanges, Fivemiletown also had their chances. Big Bob Carroll, playing in the unaccustomed midfield role thought his efforts was heading for the back of the net, but Carroll, who stole in from deep couldn’t believe it when the powerful header crashed off the post after a great cross from Anthony Benson.
Centre forward Billy Reynolds was guilty of missing several chances and was substituted at the halftime break. Reynolds pulled a stomach muscle and was replaced by Joe Keenan.
That substitution meant Ken Kerr pushed up to centre-forward and from that Fivemiletown seemed to find a much more balanced pattern.
From then on they totally dominated the proceedings. Gordon Cutler popped up to set them on their way with a typical run, beating two players and shooting home.

He hit another three, almost in the same mould; to give his side a good cushion in this one sided game. Keenen notched his goal after great work on the right.
Goalkeeper, Milton Clarke, had little to do throughout the game such was Fivemiletown’s dominance.
Benson and midfielder Alan McCutcheon performed superbly for the winning side, constantly probing a vulnerable looking Lisbellaw back line.

Following the final, the Coffey Cup was presented to Fivemiletown captain Elvis Kerr’.
